Lecturas para examen final (readings )

My teachers
Hi! I’m Belinda. I’m from Durham, England. Mike and Bethany are my friends. Bethany is thirteen years old, and Mike is fourteen. Bethany is also from Durham.  Mike is Scottish. We are in 9th grade.

Our passion is rap music. We’re in a rap band. Our name is 3 Crazy People and we’re amazing! Bethany is the singer, and she’s great. Our favorite singers are Jay-Z, 50 Cent, and Kanye West.
My school is Penrith College. Penrith College is a big school with 1,200 students.

My favorite teacher is Steve Robins. He’s the drama teacher, and his lessons are interesting. He’s from Vancouver, Canada. His passion is theater and Shakespeare. He’s a fantastic actor, and he’s very funny!
The principal is Janet Reed, and she’s also the English teacher. She’s serious and strict, but she’s a very good teacher.

The school secretary is Maria. She’s Spanish, but her English is fantastic. Her passion is tennis, and her favorite player is Rafael Nadal.

Unusual homes
Lucia’s apartment is in the center of Chicago. It’s at the top of a tall tower. The tower is 286 meters high! It’s a very modern apartment. There are big windows in all the rooms. The apartment is big, with four bedrooms. Lucia’s bedroom is really cool. The furniture is red and black, and the walls are white. There are posters of her favorite movie stars on the walls. There’s a big wardrobe with a mirror near the window. Her TV is on a shelf opposite the bed, and her computer is on the desk under the TV.

Oscar’s house is extraordinary! It’s an old plane! It’s on an island near Washington DC. His house isn’t very big, but it’s 70 meters long. There aren’t any stairs. There’s a living room with lots of small windows. There’s a small dining room, three small bedrooms, and a bathroom. The kitchen is small, but there’s a stove, a refrigerator, and some cupboards. Outside, there are two tables and some chairs. The house is near the Potomac River.  It’s fantastic in summer!

Preparing to be a tennis champion
Thirteen-year-old Julia Moreno from Barcelona, Spain, has a special dream. She wants to be a tennis champion and win the world’s top competitions.

Julia loves tennis and she plays every day. She gets up at six o’clock in the morning and plays tennis for an hour before school. After school, she goes back to the tennis club for a lesson from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Then, she plays tennis with her dad for an hour, or she sometimes goes swimming. After that, she does her homework and has dinner. Once a month, she goes to a special tennis academy for lessons. At the academy she also does gymnastics, and she sometimes plays volleyball with other teenage tennis players.

Julia’s dad says, “Julia wants to be number one and she works very hard. It isn’t always easy for her. She doesn’t often meet her friends or go out like other teenagers.” But Julia says she’s happy. “Tennis is my passion. My friends are fantastic. They often watch me play.”

Superheroes
My favorite computer game character is Mario. This funny little man is the hero of over two hundred games. Mario is an Italian-American man. He lives in a place called the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario has a brother, Luigi. Luigi is in some of the games and also in the TV cartoon series. Mario only has one superpower – he can jump – and in one game his name is Jumpman! Mario usually protects Princess Peach from a dangerous character called Bowser. I like all the Mario games, but my favorite is Super Mario Bros Wii because I can play it with my friends.            Owen (13)

Lara Croft is my favorite computer game character. She’s the hero of the Tomb Raider series. There are over fifteen games, and they’re all fantastic. In real life, Lara Croft is from London, England. In the games, she goes to lots of different countries. Lara Croft doesn’t have superpowers. She’s a good sportswoman and she can speak different languages. There are also Tomb Raider comics and movies, but I prefer the games. My favorite game is Tomb Raider: Underworld. My favorite movie is Tomb Raider II: The Cradle of Life. Angelina Jolie is Lara Croft and she’s amazing!           Jenny (14)

  Vacation in Mexico
Hi Liz,
I’m writing this e-mail from a hotel in Mexico. I’m on vacation here with my parents, my brothers Tom and Frank, and our cousin Susan. We’re staying in a really cool hotel by the sea. Right now, I’m sitting near the hotel swimming pool and I’m using dad’s laptop computer. I’m writing e-mails to all my friends back home. Susan is sunbathing by the pool and she’s becoming very red! Frank is playing volleyball on the beach with some young people. It’s great because there are lots of teenagers at the hotel. Dad is reading a Mexican newspaper. The newspaper is in Spanish and dad can’t understand it. He isn’t very happy! Mom is writing postcards to all her friends.

Tom is sitting in the bar at the moment. He’s talking to a girl from Florida. He’s buying her an ice cream! I think he likes her!
Are you having a good vacation in Brazil? Are there other teenagers at your hotel?

Write soon.
Kelly

Hummingbirds are amazing little birds. They are the smallest of all birds and weigh less than even a penny. The Bee Hummingbird, at barely more than two inches long, is the smallest bird in the world!

Unlike most birds, hummingbirds have iridescent feathers.

Iridescent feathers glitter and shine in the sun. Hummingbirds are often dazzling combinations of greens and reds or greens and blues. Others are violet, orange, golden, silver or other combinations only Mother Nature could dream up. All hummingbirds have long bills to insert into flowers. Some hummingbirds have special bills to fit in specific flowers.

Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backwards.

Hummingbirds are also unique among bird species in that they drink nectar from flowers. You can attract hummingbirds to your yard with special feeders that are filled with sugar water. These
feeders are usually bright red in color because hummingbirds are attracted to red.

TAREA para el viernes 22 de mayo (copia a mano en tu libreta)

A woodpecker is a kind of bird. Woodpeckers are found all over the world except in the North and South poles, Australia, and New Zealand. There are over 200 different kinds of woodpeckers. The two largest woodpeckers, the Imperial Woodpecker and the Ivory-billed Woodpecker are most likely extinct. Animals that are extinct are no longer found on Earth.

Woodpeckers have sharp bills for drilling into wood, and short, stiff tails which help prop them up against tree trunks and branches. Woodpeckers also have very long tongues, which help them get at insects deep within trees. Woodpeckers are often heard drumming loudly on trees before they are seen. Woodpeckers can even become pests if they learn to drum on siding of a house.

Woodpeckers can easily be attracted to backyard bird feeders with sunflower seeds or suet. Suet is a kind of animal fat that is very tasty to woodpeckers and other birds.

TAREA PARA EL DIA MIERCOLES 20 DE MAYO ( lee y copia en tu libreta.)

The Amazon is the world's largest tropical rainforest. It covers an area of nearly 2.8 million square miles, which is nearly the size of the continent of Australia. The Amazon Rainforest gets its life from the majestic Amazon River, the world's second largest river, which runs directly through the heart of the region. The rainforest itself is simply the drainage basin for the river and its many tributaries. The vast forest itself consists of four layers, each featuring its own ecosystems and specially adapted plants and animals.

The forest floor is the lowest region. Since only two percent of the sunlight filters through the top layers to the understory, very few plants grow here. The forest floor, however, is rich with rotting vegetation and the bodies of dead organisms, which are quickly broken down into nutrients integrated into the soil. Tree roots stay close to these available nutrients and decomposers such as millipedes and earthworms use these nutrients for food.

The understory is the layer above the forest floor. Much like the forest floor, only about 2- 5 percent of the sunlight reaches this shadowy realm. Many of the plants in the understory have large, broad leaves to collect as much sunlight as possible. The understory is so thick that there is very little air movement. As a result, plants rely on insects and animals to pollinate their flowers.

The layer above the understory is the canopy. This is where much of the action in the rainforest occurs. Many canopy leaves have specially adapted leaves which form "drip tips". Drip tips allow water to flow off the leaves which prevents mosses, fungi, and lichens from occupying the leaves. Leaves in the canopy are very dense and filter about 80 percent of the sunlight. The canopy is where the wealth of the rainforest's fruits and flowers grow. Bromeliads, cup-like plants, provide drinking pools for animals and breeding locations for tree frogs.

The emergent layer is above the canopy, and is the top layer of the rainforest. Trees in the emergent layer break through the canopy and may reach heights of 200 feet. Leaves in the emergent layer are small and covered with a special wax to hold water. Seeds are blown to other parts of the forest. Trees which rise to the emergent layer are massive. Many are braced by huge buttress roots. Trunks can be 16 feet in circumference. Many animals that survive in the emergent layer never touch the ground.

Tarea

Read the passage and answer the questions.

The Bald Eagle is a majestic bird. The adult bird has a brown body, brown wings, white head, and large, hooked yellow peak. Younger birds appear all brown.

Bald Eagles almost always live near water because their main food source is fish. Sometimes, however, Bald Eagles will eat dead animals (carrion). They will even steal food from other birds such as ospreys and gulls! It was for this reason that the famous Patriot Benjamin Franklin preferred the Wild Turkey as America's National symbol. Nevertheless, the Bald Eagle remains America's symbol.

Questions
  1. Why do Bald Eagles usually live near water?
  2. How are younger Bald Eagles different from adult Bald Eagles?
  3. What do Bald Eagles eat?
  4. Does Benjamin Franklin like the Bald Eagle as  America's national symbol?
  5. What is the animal Benjamin Franklin want as America's national symbol?
